Projects: Jake Bullet - Stage 1

Been having a much needed sort out of all my Red Dwarf project files (more about that later) suffice to say that I have a lot to catch up on and finally complete...  One Such project was the converting of my Kryten Base model into his many other alter egos (as pictured here).  Jake Bullet, a detective from the Cybenautic Devision of the Police Department.

Project: Kryten Head prop 1:1 scale Part 3

There must be another Red Dwarf convention on the horizon because once again my inbox has a handful of requests all demanding that I simply give them the plans to my Red Dwarf models because... (insert reason here).

I kinda stopped replying to these requests because for one, it's a little disheartening to find out that they're only really interested in all your hard work, "if it's free",  and again in some instances, that they actually don't want to make it in card but prefer un-environmentally friendly materials like plastic, metal, resin or latex?  Those types of materials alone cost a fortune, and yet they don't want to reward all my hard work having developed the kit in the first place. A kit which they now wish to use plus have my instructions available to show them how to make it ????

There's only so many times I can give the same answer before I end up loosing the will to live - hay?.  Ironically, it costs money to give stuff away for free on the internet. what with bandwidth and storage charges etc.  It's all very confusing to me at the moment and I haven't found a suitable 'business model' to this problem as yet. apart from being directly commissioned to make things for people, which I'm thrilled to do. Like the Klytus mask for example. Peoples interest in that project was a huge incentive for me as an artist and the funds have enabled me to develop more things for these patrons.

If anyone out there has any alternative suggestions as to how I can best disseminate these projects please let me know in the comments below and I'll post a questionnaire up on this blog to see what the majority of you would be in favour of.

That being said, all your Red Dwarf requests have not gone ignored either, I have been desperately trying to find the right home on the internet for these models so that all you Red Dwarf fans are able download them for free, (as requested), but with out it having to cost me anything in the process. However, I too have been met with nothing but silence on the matter. I have been on the BBC Red Dwarf forums, even tweeted Robbert Llewelyn at one point. who was interested but is so busy, (bless him), it must have just slipped his mind. Interestingly enough he was doing a book signing at the London MCM Expo this year, so I took this opportunity to go up there and present him with my fully assembled/hand made, life size Kryten paper portrait. (I found the perfect home for this model that day - hay!). He tweeted me this picture a couple of days later...

I have now just sent a message to the Official Red Dwarf Fan Club to see if they would be interested in hosting these files for you all to download and do with as you please, no response as yet but, (fingers crossed).  Remember I'm a big Red Dwarf fan too and if I could find the right home for this stuff it just might be the right incentive for me as an artist to continue to complete and develop more Red Dwarf paper projects for you all to enjoy but, if no one beyond a small hand full of fans shows any interest on official forums or at conventions then the likelihood of any "official" site seeing the potential of these designs to help drive more traffic to their websites are greatly diminished, they'll think your just not interested enough in this type of stuff...

Projects: Big Red

OMG! Can't believe I was trying to make this back in the day... :-)

Just found this SketchUp project file too.  I loved the original Red Dwarf ship design. The variations that were made after they had destroyed this version just never looked as good to me, especially that long CG version - yuck!  The only issue with this project I seem to recall now, was that I couldn't find any reference images of the other side of this craft. I don't even remember any Red Dwarf episode where they had shot a sequence of Big Red along it's left side can you?

Project: Starbug

During my computer file sort out I also found this rather interesting project. I totally forgot all about this one. It must have been around the time I was trying to figure out an interesting way to make a Starbug model in card. This design was based on a concept sketch, (I think it was a concept they had presented for the despair squid episode). The sketch is featured within one of the Red Dwarf DVD extras I seem to recall. I took a screen grap of it, (pictured above), and as I had already modelled Starbug in SketchUp at that point I must have thought it would be fun to convert my SketchUp file to see what Starbug 4: Sea Bug would have looked like in 3D. I quite like this idea, though if it were me, I'd maybe have Starbug 4 float on the surface and then utilise it's centre section as some type of diving bell which could be winched up and down from within the floating Starbug 4 platform...

What do you think?

Projects: Bob, the Skutter 3d model

Been sorting out my computer files and found some really cool projects that I had thought I'd lost for ever after my computers were stolen at the start of this year. So pleased that I have found, and had backed up this project to another device. Bob the Skutter, I remember it taking ages to work out how best to model all those curves in SketchUp. Looks Like I only have the eye left to re-do which isn't as bad as having to remodel the entire thing from scratch had this project file not been found. Phew!

Projects: Bob, the Skutter

A skutter, for those not in the know, is a maintenance robot of the Jupiter Mining Corporation's ship, Red Dwarf. I'd been asked to make this a long time ago however, it's taken me this long to collect enough source material to enable me to attempt this project. Finally made a start on it and will begin turning this character into a paper model in the new Year.

Projects: The Wildfire

Received an email from sweden where I was told about a forum called the Paper Modelers. I had a look and to my surprise stumbled over a discussion about Red Dwarf where my blog had been mentioned - (thank you for those kind words everyone)

Amongst the chatter was a request for Ace Rimmer's Dimension Jump Ship, The Wildfire. (Great suggestion!) Luckily, I had bought an old magazine not to long ago which had enough photos of this spacecraft from Red Dwarf to enable me to draw up a schematic of it, (above). From this I can now plot out a three dimensional model in sketch-up and afterward convert that into a cool paper model...
(But not before I've completed my other Red Dwarf projects first though - hay? :-)

Project: Talkie Toaster - part2

Howdy-doodily-Dooooo...
Ar,ha! It works..! - (que the sounds from a hammer horror film)

It took a few more attempts and longer than I had hoped, but I finally managed to figure out the mechanisum I needed to make my Talkie Toaster move in all the right places.
In the end I even opted to use metallic and gloss red craft card on the outside instead of it being illustrated artwork. This has really helped make Talkie look more authentic as well as much more robust. Even my friends at first glance can't quite believe that it's made from craft paper/card - See it in action on my youtube Channel!

Talkie Toaster is the perfect addition to my growing Red Dwarf paper prop collection - wont be long before we're able to produce our own Red Dwarf shows - (que those sounds from a hammer horror film - ha,ha,haaaa...)

Project: Starbug

Well this space ship needs no major introduction. Red Dwarf's - Starbug. This has been on my to-do-list for quite a while and i've begun to figure out how to make a large paper model of it. As you can see above, I'm still tinkering on this project in Sketch-up but I'm getting there slowly.

The challenge here is for me to design it in such a way that the paper joins will form an irregular pattern so it's not obvious how this paper model has been constructed. I think that it will look much better this way and should be easier to glue together as opposed to the conventional way of making paper spheres.

The ultimate goal is to eventually use these finished paper models to re-enact some of the model shots from the TV show for my own
paper model fan-film effects - I can't wait..! :-)

Project: The Post Pod

This idea from the show in my opinion was truly a stroke of genius. For me it opens up so many unexplored questions about the Royal Mail operating in space. there's simply loads of potential to make up some great fan-films based around this theme.
Sadly you only saw a glimpse of the post pod in Red Dwarf, not enough for me to make an accurate replica from, so I've decided to design my own version based on the Type-K pillar box produced in the UK around the 1960's I believe...

If there's any illustrators out there who've some cool designs based on this theme then please get in touch. I would be happy to develop the designs which excite me the most into a downloadable paper model kit...

Project: The MK-1 Bazookoid. Stage 2

Here it is, my first draft model of a full size Bazookoid, made from craft paper/card. WOW - This is a cool prop! but I can understand now why the actors felt that the MK-1 was awkward to hold and use in the show...

Can't wait to see this model illustrated but, boy was I right in saying that this would be a complex model - so many component parts! Still, not as complex as some future Red Dwarf models I've been developing. Hint, Hint - Exciting Stuff to come!!

Just a few more corrections to go which will help improve both its structure and disguise some of it's joins better. It'll be well worth the wait though - hope you all agree... I've also been frantically trying to fit all it's components onto A4 sheets but, it's no good - you'll just have to buy an A3 printer for this one folks... ;-)

Fully assembled this model measures 98 cm long, it's about 30cm high up to the very top of the handle and is roughly 15cm across at it's widest point, which is on the barrel.

P.S On a personal note, now I've seen this photo of myself... its nice to see my studio (aka, the spare bedroom) resembling the BBC's "broom cupboard" from 80's Children's TV. All I need now is a knitted puppet to keep us entertained - Te,He :-)

Project: The Mk-1 Bazookoid. Stage1

I'm not really a gun fanatic but figured that any self respecting Red Dwarf fan will need this classic prop from the show to create a 'proper' fan film or to add that finishing touch to their Red Dwarf costume. I think that's is more a mining tool than weapon anyway...

Originally, this prop had two handles, one either side, and joined to an accompanying back pack by two thick tubes. Throughout each season this prop kept eviolving to the point where they opted to start over and recreate a smaller version from scratch - (the Mk-2)

Have completed my 3D model of the Mk-1 in Sketch-up and designed it in such a way that you'll be able to cock the bazookoid just as they do in the show. Had thought of making it shoot ping pong balls but, decided that this model will be complicated enough for now so, have gone straight on to making the first draft model of it out of paper...

Project: Talkie Toaster part1

I thought I would try to recreate the Talkie Toaster prop from Red Dwarf because I could envision many a fan wanting to recreate their own Youtube version of the infamous.., "no baps, bagels, buns..." gag from the show. This particular version is the one which Kryten had reconstructed as part of his experiment.

Making a quick three dimensional model of it in Sketch-up was simple enough, and after making my first version of it in paper I decided to complicate things a bit for myself - (yet again).
I felt that this model should move to encourage the fan to use it. So, I'm now in the process of converting this model into a paper automaton. If all goes to plan the side handles and toast should move up and down plus the front light display panel should also look like its changing pattern - as if talkie was a talking...

lets hope my cunning plan works - I'm on my third attempt so far... but, it's looking good!

Project: The Holly Hop Drive Prop

Midway through my frustrations developing a paper model of Kryten's head I decided to make something quick and simple for a change. and you couldn't get much simpler than one of my favorate props from season two - 'The Holly Hop Drive'..Yer! - basically "it's a big red box with start and stop on it" :-)

This particular model is approximatley half the size of the original prop, but I figured technologie has moved on since the 90's and as everything is being made smaller now a days I didn't think it''ll be a huge problem - he,he,he - it's small enough to fit on the dasboard of your car now...

I've added a few imbelisments of my own, the front label for instance rather than just being stuck onto the front of the box has become an indented feature giving the box a bit more structural strength...

I think I'll have a go at talkie Toaster next :-)

Project: Kryten Head prop 1:1 scale Part2

A new enthusium for this project came over me resently and I have finally reached a point where I'm happy with it. I've included Kryten's flip top head feature as seen in season 7 - "a tika to ride" which reveals his brain as it t'were.

All I have to do now is complete the assemvbly instruction and to find an approprate place on the web for you all to download make and enjoy my model. Personally would like to customise it now, turning him into "jake Bullet" Kryten's private eye alta ego.

Project: Kryten Head prop 1:1 scale

I love Red Dwarf and have long thought that the angler shape of Kryten's head could be made into a rather convincing paper model. I decided to start this project shortly after being made redundant to cheer me up in between a rather disheartening spell of job hunting.
Kryten, (pictured left), for those not in the know, is a series 4000 Mechanoid from the BBC's popular Sci-Fi comedy series Red Dwarf, the actor Robert Llewellyn is the man behind the mask...

What I especially like about Kryten is that over the 8 seasons of the show his character has developed many facets.
My initial concept was to develop a basic paper model of Kryten and encourage the fans to customise it, adapting my basic design into their personal favorite variation of Kryten. However, as time went on I became a bit obsessive over this particular paper sculpt, constantly trying to get the look just right.
My perfectionist obsession has seriously dragged this project out. The real problem I started to realize was that with each season the characters make up effects kept changing, so each new reference picture I found of him to help me resolve the issues I was having meant that my paper sculpture constantly evolved too...

Frustrating times indeed...
